Hi, I’m May, the founder of Maythematics.

Where It All Began — Teaching from the Heart

Teaching has always been my passion. Helping students overcome their fear of Math and watching their confidence grow gave me a deep sense of purpose.

My journey began at home, teaching my younger siblings. After junior college, I started part-time tutoring. What began as just a way to earn extra money soon became my calling.

Getting My Motorcycle License to Teach Around Singapore

Back in university, I was so passionate about teaching that I wanted to reach as many students as possible — no matter where they lived. That’s why I decided to get my motorcycle license.

It wasn’t easy. I went through countless falls, collected bruises, and braved many rainy rides that left me completely drenched on the way to students’ homes.

Also, I often spent more hours teaching than studying, but it was worth every moment.

Building up experience

After graduating, I continued to sharpen my skills at an established Math tuition centre run by ex-MOE teachers where I spent years building experience, refining my teaching methods, and understanding what truly helps students thrive.

The Crossroads of 2021

Then COVID-19 struck. At that time, I was pregnant, and vaccines for expectant mothers were not yet declared safe. To continue at my workplace, I would have needed to be vaccinated.

I faced a heartbreaking choice: continue my career and risk my baby’s health, or step away from the job I loved.

I chose my baby. I quit.

My husband also lost his job as a Pilates instructor. Overnight, we had no stable income and survived by doing Grab deliveries. It was a season of humility, fear, and uncertainty.

Teaching from a Tiny Home

Amidst the struggle, a small lifeline appeared: a few loyal students continued coming to my tiny two-room HDB for lessons.

Each time, my husband would carry our 1st born, Novi out of the house for hours, so that we can ensure students is able to learn in a more conducive space. I felt torn between wanting the best for my students and the guilt of sacrificing my own child’s comfort.

Discovering TikTok

Those days, I really missed being able to teach and make a positive difference to more students like how I was able to do so prior to Covid.

One day, a student mentioned learning math tricks from TikTok. That sparked an idea: To create Math content to help more students learn Math!

So, between breastfeeding breaks and sometimes with my infant sitting beside me, I started creating short educational videos.

Never expected student base to grow

I also started going live on TikTok to teach — at first, fewer than five people tuned in. But I held on to one belief: as long as there is even one student willing to learn, I will teach.

Back then, TikTok was still seen as just a dancing and entertainment app for teens. I never imagined children would actually sign up for tuition through it.

To my surprise, children began signing up for Math tuitions at my house after discovering my videos.

Outgrowing My Home

By the end of 2022, I was teaching 50 students at home every week.

That was when I knew it was time to take a leap of faith.

In 2023, I poured out my life savings and opened my first tuition centre — right opposite Kembangan MRT. That single step marked the official beginning of Maythematics.

Beginnings of MTM

Leveraging insights from the gaps I identified in my previous teaching experience, I was determined to set out to enhance several aspects of this industry that could make the experience better for the students, parents and the team.

Growing a Team

From there, Maythematics grew into a team of passionate teachers. Together, we’ve helped students transform — from failing to passing, from passes to distinctions. Parents told us their children finally enjoyed Math, and word of mouth spread quickly.

Maythematics was born out of hardship, but it has grown through love, resilience, and an unshakable belief: with the right guidance, every child can shine in Math

What started as home-based lessons grew into our first flagship centre opposite Kembangan MRT in 2023, and by 2025, into a bigger space to welcome even more families. Along the way, the true reward has been seeing children and parents from all over Singapore gain confidence and joy in Math.
